20.09.2018 in Bluepharma

The event took place on September 19, in Coimbra, for a deep debate on the development of local economies

On September 19, 2018, EuroBic promoted the fifth edition of the Challenges and Opportunities Forum at the Bissaya Barreto Foundation in Coimbra. This initiative is aimed at stimulating a profound debate on the development of local economies, with the participation of entrepreneurs, regional authorities and market specialists.

After events already held in Braga, Setúbal, Aveiro and Leiria, this edition of the EuroBic Forum brought together, in the city of Coimbra, more than a hundred participants, including the Chairman of Bluepharma, Dr. Paulo Barradas Rebelo, and Dr. José Couto, Administrator of Microplastics and Chairman of CEC/CCIC – Business Council of the Central Region/ Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Central Region.

Guest speakers also included Dr. Pedro Costa, Chairman of the Coimbra Business School | ISCAC, and Dr. Carlos Cidade, Vice-Mayor of Coimbra.

The President of Bluepharma Group, made it a point to highlight “the undeniable qualities” of the region - knowledge, innovation and a skilled workforce, but he was more sceptical when it came to forecasting the future. "Today the world is increasingly competitive and therefore Coimbra cannot fall behind, cannot lose a minute. The next few years will be decisive in the positioning and development of the city, which must be managed like a company. In this respect, Lisbon and Porto are cities that clearly did not stay asleep.".

In the end, the general feeling was that Coimbra has a unique potential, but, as Paul Barradas Rebelo said, the city has to get a move on. Everyone agreed on the unequalled qualities of the territory, only diverging in their opinions on the strategy for the future and the benefits of recent policies. The EuroBic Challenges and Opportunities Forum seeks to create a space for cooperation among stakeholders in a region, with a view to an objective analysis of the advantages and potentialities of the business fabric and the development requirements created by the expectations of the society.
